The power of Colostrum and it’s effect on Immunity

Colostrum is known to create transfer factor in the body which in return helps build up the body’s immunity to remember certain illnesses.

Transfer factor is a theory that immunity information in the body can be transferred from cell to cell.  A cell has the ability to teach the immune system to recognize bacteria and viruses that are harmful to the body.  As this is the primary job of the immune system to recognize harmful bacteria and viruses and then fight them.  The body has the ability to effectively defend against bacteria, fungus, and other diseases.  The transfer factor molecules create a memory in the body of the past pathogens it has been exposed to, which is integral to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the immune system.

Colostrum is produced from the mammary glands of all mammals late during pregnancy or directly after giving birth.  It is high in carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies.  It is also low in fat because it is difficult for newborns to digest fat because of their small digestive systems.  It acts in delivering nutrients in a low volume but highly concentrated.  There is also a mild laxative associated with it that helps a newborn pass their first stool and rid of the waste of dead red blood cells due to birth.  Colostrum contains immunoglobulin assisting with the prevention of jaundice and it helps to create physical strength and build up the general immune system.

As colostrum helps build the body’s initial immunity it also builds the initial memory of the immune system.  Transfer factors are made up of tiny molecules of protein produced by immune cells in the body called T cells.  The transfer factors are what allow the immune system to remember the conditions for which the body has become immune to and established.

A good example of the way transfer factors work is like the chickenpox during childhood.  When a child is infected and treated the body develops a memory of the illness.  This memory prevents the body from being re-infected later in life.  The body will have a transfer factor molecule specifically for chicken pox and this molecule is an exact blueprint of what the disease looks like.  This allows the body to immediately recognize and respond to any type of re-infection or exposure.

Scientists have begun working on creating additional transfer factor for human consumption in an effort to strengthen immune systems even further.  The way they are doing this is by working with colostrum from cows.  This is because a healthy cow has the ability to produce millions of different transfer factors.  However, when a cow is exposed to a pathogen then it produces another transfer factor creating a blueprint of the specific virus.

It is said that transfer factors can cross different mammal lines.  For instance, a human can be given a cow’s transfer factors.  If these transfer factors have created blueprints of different pathogens then the human will immediately have the immunity to those pathogens as if they were already exposed themselves.

Colostrum is responsible for building the body’s initial transfer factor and immune system.  By creating transfer factors in other mammals, scientists are able to give these to humans building stronger immune systems in humans.

Insects may hurt cat health

The scourges of heat combined with humidity have brought with them a plethera of mosquitoes to Tulsa, oklahoma and it is not just humans who are fighting these aweful critters.

Cats, for instance, might face the dreaded heartworm after being bitten by mosquitos.

The signs to look for might not show for a few months or even years, as the sheer numbers of heartworms often accumulates rather gradually.

Like cats, dogs might show no early signs of heartworms, while severely infected animals might show signs which include a cough, low energy levels, lowered appetite and also weight loss.

Heartworms in dogs are eliminated by a drug known as adulticide, that is injected into a muscle in a sequence of treatments. However, there are no products are approved for the treatment of heartworms in cats in the US at this time, unfortunately.

The risk of reinfection during treatment is eliminated by using a heartworm preventive.

The mosquito picks up microfilaria while it is feeding on the blood from an infected animal such as a feline.
It is live for some 2 weeks in the salivary glands of a mosquito. The mosquito bites another animal and releases the heartworm larvae into the wound and ultimately the bloodstream.

Nutrition And Wellness News

Much of the following information was taken from the August Trilogy Health and Wellness newsletter:
The majority nutritionists and dieticians concur that dietary supplements may be quite useful for achieving a balanced diet. In addition, high-quality supplements
may help to prevent long-term nutritional deficiencies. Furthermore, stress and a bad diet may disrupt the body’s natural ability to process and effectively use vitamins and minerals.
Vitamins are in fact nutrients that have to come from outside sources, like food & nutritional supplements, since the body cannot manufacture them on it’s own. It would also help if more people would attend Phoenix gyms like v as well as Chandler fitness classes overall.

Holistic researchers say that highly processed foods have a reduced nutritional value. The vast majority of mass-produced food products are chock full of preservatives such as nitrites and MSG, and these
can cause negative reactions in certain individuals, unfortunately. Processing and refining foods may reduce the fiber content of some food products.
More than ever, individuals are trying to maintain low-calorie diets. As a result many do not eat the diversity of foods that is required for complete nutrition.   Trilogy has risen to meet the demand for better nutrition with a unique line of vitamin, mineral & herbal supplements.

More news about Omega-3’s and fish Oil

The Latest Fish Oil Supplementation research
Here is a great fish oil article written by Lori mathews

In the quest to achieve better health and wellness, fish oil supplements have become an increasingly popular way to take advantage of many different medical benefits. Fish oil originates from the tissues of oily fish, such as carp, herring, salmon, and fresh tuna. Today, fish oil is recommended as part of a healthy diet because of the amount of omega-3 fatty acids contained, which is known to reduce inflammation throughout the body and lessen the threat of coronary heart disease (among other things).

There are two main ways to include fish oil as part of a healthy diet. The first involves the consumption of oily fish, including sardines and cod, which contain oils throughout their body and about their gut, unlike other species of fish. Depending on the species, oily fish fillets may offer up to 30% oil. Besides omega-3 fatty acids, oily fish also provides a good source of vitamins A and D.
Decreased Pain Levels and Inflammation

Omega-3 fatty acids may posses the power to lessen inflammation in the body, as well as ease the pain associated with arthritis and cystitis. Rheumatoid arthritis patients often report an improvement in joint pains and inflammation when taking fish oil supplements.

Treats Depression and Stress

Some individuals have been able to ease their symptoms of depression by implementing omega-3 fish oil supplements into their diet. Fish oils have also been linked to showing promise in treating bipolar and psychotic patients. Supplements may also help to promote the overall mood of patients, and may even reduce premenstrual stress.

Cardiovascular Improvements

The heart, arteries, and veins may benefit from fish oil because it has been known to help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure, while at the same time improving “good” cholesterol levels.
Fights Strokes and Heart Attack

The threat of stroke and heart attack may be decreased with the introduction of fish oils into a diet because they may help to prevent blood clots and other damage to the heart. A decreased risk of sudden death and heart attacks has also been seen.
Enhances Brain Activity

Fish oil is known to boost intelligence and overall happiness in users, as well as improve the memory and ability to stay focused. In the elderly, the risk of dementia and memory loss sometimes decreases with the use of fish oil supplements. Additionally, mothers who consume or take a high amount of omega-3/fish oils during pregnancy often give birth to children with a higher IQ.

Combats Childhood Disorders

Children, who suffer from disorders, such as ADD and ADHD, have experienced a better quality of life when incorporating fish oil fatty acids into their diet. Additional conditions that respond to fish oils include dyslexia and compulsive disorders.

Omega-3 Fish Oil studies

In a recent study, researchers found the participants who consumed higher than average amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, like those found in fish oil supplements, were less likely to have high blood pressure. The results were adjusted for age, weight, gender, exercise and several other measures, and were based upon sample groups from countries all over the world. Nearly five thousand men and women took part in the study, which makes it one of the largest studies of its kind.

The report, featured in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, cited that even small reductions in blood pressure can have significant long-term effects on health. Researchers contend that these findings may help combat the increasing number of those suffering from the illness.

The clear consensus of this study seems to strongly indicate that supplementing your diet with a high-quality fish oil can benefit your heart health.

Meanwhile, A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tracked the effects of fish oil supplementation in overweight adults engaged in new exercise regimens. The findings may have a dramatic impact on our current understanding of maintaining weight and long-term heart health.

Tainted Chinese Toothpaste

The United States government on June 1 told consumers to beware of using toothpaste produced in China since it might contain a particularly poisonous chemical which is also used in antifreeze.
The FDA reported that individuals should discard toothpaste with labeling that states it was made in China. They are very worried that these products may contain diethylene glycol.

The agency is not aware of any reports in the US of poisoning from toothpaste, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at 2 retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami, Florida and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico. In addition, China executed the former head of their version of the FDA shortly after loud complains from the U.S. over contaminents found in both human and pet food products that are produced there.

The ingredient in question, called DEG, is used as a lower-cost sweetener and thickening agent. The highest concentration of the chemical found in toothpaste so far was between 3-4 percent.

“It does not belong in toothpaste even in small concentrations,” said the FDA’s Deborah M. Autor.

The FDA heightened its scrutiny of toothpaste made in China due to reports of contamination in a number of different nations, like Panama.

The agency is especially worried about chronic exposure to DEG in kids and individuals with either kidney or liver disease.

Agency officials said they had no estimate of just how many units of tainted toothpaste might have made it into the U.S.

“Our concern today is potentially about all toothpaste that comes in from China,” Autor said. “Our estimate is that China makes up about $3.3 million of the two billion U.S. toothpaste market.”

They also issued an import alert for all dental products containing DEG. This alert means that toothpaste from China will actually be stopped at the border.

More Pet Food Recall Updates

The recent food recalls have truly hit North America by storm. Merely a day after the first dry food was added to the more than fifty dog brands and forty plus cat brands affected by the recall, the list was further expanded on March 31 to also include a new brand even as authorities were baffled as to why the substance would kill dogs and cats, according to a report on Excite News. Nestle Purina PetCare Co. said it was recalling all sizes and all varieties of the Alpo Prime Cuts & Gravy wet dog food with certain date codes. They stated that some of the food had a contaminated wheat gluten that was from China. This gluten is supplied to numerous brands in fact. For instance this same U.S. supplier furnished wheat gluten, which is a protein source, to a Canadian firm, Menu Foods, which this month recalled recalled some million containers of wet dog and cat food it produces for sale under nearly one hundred brand labels. On April second another major supplier took a hit when the Science Diet announced a recall. This was particularly significant because this was a brand that many veternarians had been recommending for some time. The next day Yahoo News reported that many dog and cat owners were cooking or otherwise preparing their own food for their animals. Menu Foods and the FDA, which regulates the pet food industry, have refused to identify the firm which supplied the contaminated wheat gluten in question. Does this indicate menu Foods and other big suppliers are policing themselves? In this era of Enron, Worldcom, and corporate greed in general, is it a good idea to let the big boys police themselves? Is that fair to our pets, who cannot speak out on their own? To me, the fact that the powers that be who regulate the industry refuse to disclose the name of the Chinese forim providing the badingredient seems to reinforce some suspicions that I have. Protecting this company but not protecting our pets? I am recommending to everyone that will listen to buy a premium dog or cat food for their pet. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has stated on the 30th of March that its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food included the tainted wheat gluten. The FDA said the source was the same unidentified company. Hill’s, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co. Meanwhile, a May 6 article in the Progressive Grocer stated that Wegmans cat food had also been ‘pulled into the web of the notorious Menu Foods pet food recall’. This firm has added to it’s rather extensive reacall list some items that do not have wheat gluten. Who knows what brand will be recalled next. The best brand I an aware of is Premium Cat Food from Life’ Abundance and Dr. Jane

but there are several top notch premium pet foods out there to choose from. Look for whole food ingredients
and freshness above all else. The ones that mention they are human grade are also usually a safe bet in my experience.

Can Fish Oil Helps Fight Depression?

Here is a new fish oil article from Lori Mathews

Researchers have known for a long time that the sea holds many great cures and treatments for humans. Some of the compounds made naturally in sea life are not found anywhere on land and have proven to help humans in a number of ways. Now researchers are saying that fish oil that contains omega-3 fatty acids can help people fight depression. Doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital who have watched the clinical trials report that they are impressed with the results. These early results should encourage more testing. Since fish oil does not have negative effects, it is a study that can easily be conducted on a wide scale. Many scientists and researchers first became interested in fish oil when they observed that the countries with the highest rates of fish consumption had the lowest rates of reported depression. It was also observed that mothers in England that ate little or no fish during pregnancy had twice the risk of going through postpartum depression when compared to women that ate higher amounts of fish during pregnancy. These initial observations are what caused scientists and researchers to want to find out why these trends occurred, and if fish really was the cause. In the research, it was found that the specific cause of the anti-depression benefits was the omega-3 fatty acids found in many fish oils. Researchers have also fed omega-3 fatty acids, independent of fish oils, to piglets and found the omega-3 fatty acids had a similar effect on the piglet brains as some prescription medicines does. Some anti-depressants help fight depression by raising the level of serotonin, and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to do the same. Omega-3 fatty acids are not produced by the human body and are mainly found in seafood. Of the omega-3 fatty acids, the one with the largest impact on the human brain is DHA. DHA is believed to help neurons communicate, which means the signals in the brain can be processed faster and better. Like other omega-3 fatty acids, DHA cannot be produced by the human body, so we must attain it purely from our diets. At Sheffield University, researchers have found that depressed patients given omega-3 fatty acids see improvement more than twice as often as depressed patients given a placebo. Many patients that have taken anti-depressants to combat their depression find that it makes them feel strange. While omega-3 fatty acids raise the level of serotonin much like these anti-depressants do, no patients have reported the side effects that they can have. Many early studies indicate that as little as one gram of omega-3 fatty acids is effective in treatment. This dose can be taken as part of a supplement, or simply by eating fish such as salmon, tuna, or sardines. These positive early results should lead to more study using larger sample sizes. Some researchers even feel omega-3 fatty acids will be effective at fighting the effects of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Even though fish oil may not help everyone with depression, people who do not like how some anti-depressants make them feel might be very interested to discuss with their doctor if they can try it as a means to fight their depression. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Is Goji Juice Beneficial to your Health?

Were you aware that many of the longest living folks around happen to eat regular servings of a relatively small fruit which is considered by some researchers to be the most powerful anti-aging food known? For this reason it is legendary in Asia, where it is tradionally associated with longevity, while modern research verifies that there may be no berry which is higherin antioxidants than the wolf berry from which goji juice is made. In fact this juice features 4 individual polysaccharides (these are important phytonutrient compounds) which happen to run and monitor some of the body’s main defense systems. As a matter of fact, many published research studies have verified the fact that these polysaccharides are the single most essential bioactive parts of the said berry. These polysaccharides are true Master Molecule’s and are not found in any other plant on the planet. Some researchers such as Dr. Earl Mendell consider Goji Juice to be a superior health alternative than simply eating the berry, since the quality of mainstream available dehydrated goji berries may vary substantially, and there is also the strong possibility that the polysaccharides in the dried berries have already oxidized and degraded by the time you eat them. Liquid form also adds versatility in preparation. More of Dr. Mendell’s research on this topic can be found at Premium Goji Juice from Freelife and there you will find a plethera of research studies. If you decide to eat the dried berry by itself, know that there is more than one type of goji berry. In fact, just as there are number of different kinds of grapes used in wine, there is a plethera of goji varieties. We are talking more than forty species of it growing in Tibet region of China alone! The goji berry is sometimes referred to as the wolf berry.

Pet Food recall Update

Here is a quick update on the pet Food recall: rat poison was not found in the recent batch testings, and Dry food was recalled today for the first time. Also, according to the National Ledger (March 30, 2007), The pet food recall has now widened to include at least 1 brand of dry food.  According to the Fox News, Hills Pet Nutrition recalled 1 of its brands of dry cat kibble for fear it contains melamine, which is the very same toxin which forced Menu Foods to pull “cuts and gravy” products from shelves across North America recently.

It is a kind of cat food which is called Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry food.  The firm states that it is not taking any chances after melamine, a chemical used as a  fertilizer in Asia and also to make plastic kitchenwares, was identified as the most likely culprit in the Menu Foods recall – one of the largest of its kind ever in North America.
